ORIGINAL PLAY, 2018 - 2019
Film
Filmed in Poland 2018-19 as well as re-using archival material from the 1980-90’s the film is a documentation based around an organisation; Original Play. OP is using different methods on interplay and nonverbal communication as a way to strengthen trust, and integrity by inviting children to play through play signals, a dialogue in movement. The method has been developed by Fred O. Donaldsson, a South African child psychologist who has been researching children and wild animals for thirty years by studying original play behaviour and is currently used in several places in the world, schools, new arrivals or/and for children in need extra support. The film is based around the practice of Jolanta Graczykowska living in Warsaw, Poland. For her the practice is an extension of peacekeeping, inspired by the ideas of the philosopher Martin Buber, where she highlights the importance of starting with the children by giving them the opportunity for increased trust. At the same time, increased work with safety around children, adults and young people reflects the experience around security and is an example of how our time responds to and experiences a greater need for defense.
